Taiwan Straits

There seems to be a pressing need for a serious rethink of foreign policy amongst the Republic of China's top civil administrators. A day after Minister Chen's use of colourful language in reference to Singapore's criticism of the pro-independence movement, Premier Yu has upped the ante by threatening a retaliatory attack on Shanghai should the mainland Chinese initiate a first-strike on Taipei and Kaohsiung. While I will not impose my private beliefs on President Chen, I do feel sometimes that a projection of power commensurate with Taiwan's actual military and economic capabilties would be advisable as a first step to gaining some form of credibility on the global stage.
